About the Part 107 exam
Who needs a Part 107 certificate?
Anyone flying a drone for something other than pure recreation: real estate photos, roof and tower inspections, mapping, video for a business or any paid job. Recreational flyers do not need it; instead they pass the FAA's free Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST) and follow the recreational rules.
How is the test structured?
The Unmanned Aircraft General, Small (UAG) test has 60 multiple-choice questions and a 2-hour time limit. You need 70% to pass. It is taken in person at an FAA-approved knowledge testing center, and you must be at least 14 to take it (16 to receive the certificate).
How do I sign up for the test?
Create a profile in the FAA's IACRA system to get an FAA Tracking Number (FTN), then schedule the test with the FAA's testing provider, PSI. After you pass, apply for your remote pilot certificate in IACRA. The TSA runs a security check before the certificate is issued.
What if I fail?
You can retake the test after 14 calendar days. Bring the failed test report to the testing center; no instructor sign-off is needed.
Does the certificate expire?
No, but to keep flying under it you must complete the FAA's free online recurrent training every 24 calendar months.
Is this the official test?
No. This is practice material to help you prepare. The real test is given at FAA-approved testing centers and also includes questions that use chart figures from the FAA's testing supplement, so study sectional charts alongside these questions. This site is not affiliated with the FAA.
